Are you new to the world of death metal? Maybe you’ve heard about it but just don’t know where to start. We’re here to tell you why we think death metal is worth your time and what makes this genre so appealing!

Death metal is a subgenre of heavy metal that originated in the mid-1980s. It’s characterized by growling vocals, down-tuned guitars, and fast tempos. Death metal has become one of the most popular genres for underground music and can be heard at live shows across the world. Some people are hesitant to listen because they think it sounds too intense or aggressive but we’re here to tell you there are other reasons why death metal is worth your time! Here’s our list of 6 reasons why death:

1. It’s great for when you’re angry

If you’re the type of person that needs to express their anger and frustration, death metal is a great way to do it. Its aggressive energy can give relief if expressed in song form!

Ever wanted to smash a face in?

We’re not talking about the type of person that’s angry all the time – they listen to death metal anyway. We mean those moments when you just need to take out your anger on something, like your neck, and death metal will get you headbanging like there’s no tomorrow.

Rest assured that there are plenty of other ways we could have worded this point but it seems like the most logical way to put it is: “death metal makes life better.”

The more death metal you listen to, the less angry you’ll feel. It’s a proven fact! Mitigate any violent intentions by simply turning up that volume and nod to the beats.

2. You can blast it at any volume and nobody will complain

Nobody has to hear your death metal. It’s true! When you’re mad and want to take it out on someone (not in a violent way, of course), turn up the volume as loud as you can and let ‘er rip.

Start off with something chilled, like Cannibal Corpse or Cattle Decapitation.

If people are trying to sleep or study around you, they’ll be able to do so with ease. Or not. But that doesn’t matter. Nobody’s getting hurt after all. Right?

Right?!!

3. Death Metal is perfect for if your parents are trying to get romantic next door

Ever had those nights where your parents are acting weird with each other just before bedtime? Well, let them get it on and then crack open a fresh case of Obituary. One of two things will happen: Either they’ll carry on, but you won’t hear it, or they’ll stop and wonder which neighbour is mowing the lawn that time of the night.

So there we go. Another valid reason. Death Metal is perfect for when you need to drown out the noise of your parents getting down and dirty.

4. Death metal lyrics are deep, meaningful, and thought-provoking

Death metal is more than just a genre of music. It’s also used as lyrical inspiration for poets to write about their deepest thoughts and feelings from the darkest parts of their souls. The death metal community was largely influenced by early black metal bands like Mayhem, Venom, Bath and so on. So there’s a lot of pretty serious stuff going on in death metal lyrics.

Death metal lyrics are typically about:

  • loss, turmoil and pain
  • battle with one’s self or a force that seeks to destroy them
  • immortality, life after death, the afterlife

As negative as these seem they’re not all negative*

These are some of the most powerful topics that death metal lyrics discuss. If you give them a chance, they can change your life and open up spiritual doors.

Take for example the song “Finish Them” by Cattle Decapitation. This is one of my favourites because it’s an excellent representation of corporate entities destroying our planet for their own gain.

6. Death metal is a good genre to listen to while high on weed or meth

Nonsense! Death metal is plug and play. You don’t need to get wired on any substance other than your brain’s own natural neural structures. It’s a great workout for the part of your brain that’s associated with learning and memory.

Death metal will keep your brain young and fresh. And death metal will make you smarter.

It’s true, you know! Experiments have shown that the music genre can improve cognitive functioning, especially when done in moderation and with a trained ear. One study found that musicians are better at solving puzzles than non-musicians because of their listening habits.

So turn up some face-melting death metal and give your brain a good old fashioned workout!
