Interview with Leon Botha
Leon Botha AKA DJ Solarize is a man well known for his eccentric yet exquisite art-work, but also known for being a genuine warrior of being. All hail as an inspirational achiever, natural artist and a musical radiance has entered the building. Headbang Today contentedly welcomes Solarize to the headbanger quarters! Interview by Scream Scream: I am privileged to be able to grab a few minutes out of your time for this interview. We usually interview a metal band here and there depending on who impressed us at the right moment, but no one ever said that we’re limited to bands only! So, how have you been lately? Been serving those lemon slices back? Leon:Peace, privileged to be interviewed… Especially since you say it’s out of the usual. Been a hectic year, but surviving. You can say slicing and serving… at a unusual tempo. Ja. Scream: As a personal fan of your artwork, I have to ask you this: Where does your inspiration channel from? Leon: I would say that life inspires me –pain, love, and the correspondance between all these extremes are somehow linked to a will to create, or act as a channel to manifest into form. Scream: […]
EXCLUSIVE interview with Jari [WINTERSUN]!
Q. To start off readers who may not know about Wintersun: A common debate amongst all of us is being able to unanimously agree on a genre/s of any given band. As far as Wintersun goes, tags such as epic, power, black, folk and melodic metal have been placed on this band. If you could describe Wintersun’s sound, how would you classify it? One title I could give is “universal metal”. Wintersun is not limited with certain genre or genres and I like to mix lots of different styles into my music with good taste of course. I will not have any specific rules what Wintersun´s music should sound like. I could even make a techno album under Wintersun´s name, but I don´t think our record company would like that very much. With the future albums Wintersun´s music will evolve quite a lot into many different directions, although I think the core of Wintersun´s music is probably always going to be “melodic metal” or “epic melodic metal”. Q. Would you call Wintersun a solo project or a group effort? The first album was a solo project. I hired Kai Hahto to play drums on it. After that our record […]

JOHN 5 On The Time He Met Cliff Burton
As Metal Injection has best put it: In the 80s, you couldn’t simply tweet Cliff Burton. If you were extremely lucky, you could try and find him backstage somewhere. And lucky is exactly what John 5 was hoping to get. John 5 told Revolver Magazine about the unorthodox way in which he was able to simply stroll backstage and get some moments with Cliff: I went to go see Metallica twice when they were opening up for Ozzy on the Ultimate Sin tour — once at Joe Louis Arena and then at Pine Knob. And I remember I bought a pass off somebody. And I just walked backstage! I don’t tell many people this, and I don’t know why because it’s a pretty cool story, but I remember being backstage and talking to Cliff [Burton]. And I remember he was drying his hair with a blow dryer. He was brushing his hair and drying it after the show. And he was wearing bellbottoms. And I hadn’t really see that before. And I was like, “Man, I really love your band and I think you guys are the greatest.” I was just talking to him! It was really weird. It was something else for me. That’s for sure. Danish Post Metal Band, LLNN Release New Video
Sludge/Post Metal band, LLNN have released a new video for their track “Appeaser” from their album “Deads”. Set for release on the 27th of April via Pelagic Records, this is what LLNN have to say with this anticipated release: We are fascinated by how the human mind tends to interpret random images, or patterns of light and shadows, as creatures and structures. A psychological phenomenon called “Pareidolia”. And how music and visuals can evoke certain emotions in us and let our imagination unfold into abstract storytelling. These are the thoughts behind the music video and the album artwork of “Deads” (with photographs by drummer Rasmus G. Sejersen). The overall album theme of “Deads” is about births and downfalls of civilizations in other worlds throughout the universe. From creation to final decay, the depletion of the host – scenes which inspired the music video. All the footage is filmed mostly with macro lenses to create the extreme close-ups in combination with a few wide shots. Created in a minimalistic setup in our parents home. (Combined with some heavy Halo Reach 2v2 gaming. Come get some!). Pre Order “Deads” Here
South African Death Metal Band Chaos Doctrine Thrash Out New Video
With their self-titled debut album set for a mid-year release ,Johannesburg Death Metal Band Chaos Doctrine have unleashed a vicious video for the track My Demise Pt II: The Rage My Demise is a two part epic depicting the systematic decay of a human mind – starting with ‘The Hatred’ (Pt I) and culminating in ‘The Rage’ (Pt II). The speed and lyrical content of Pt II works together to create the sense of a frantic lust for violence: “Hell is coming and it’s wearing my face, I’m your God in this Chaos Age”, “Take a look, do you like what you see – Chaos Doctrine, Hate Eternally”. This is woven together by samples from the Hellraiser movies, and carefully selected video footage which reflects a fragile state of mind that has gone beyond its breaking point. – Dr D, Vocals. My Demise Pt I will be available on the debut album together with three previously released singles Cult, The Genocide Number and FTG as well as 4 other unreleased tracks. “Chaos Doctrine fuel their high-octane music with ingredients that range from death metal to thrash, from groove to industrial, but they supercharge their hybrid metal machine with undiluted rage.” […]

Latitudes premiere first track ‘Moorland Is the Sea’ from ‘Part Island’
Influenced by a variety of music artists like NEUROSIS, RUSH, KING CRIMSON, BLUT AUS NORD, IMMOLATION, CONVERGE and MASTODON: LATITUDES will release their new studio album ‘Part Island’ on the 5th April 2019 via Debemur Morti Productions. Looking inward for inspiration, these talented musicians present a powerfully unique record: riff-heavy and devastating, restless and condensed, melodic and atmospheric, imbued with unrelenting forward motion. Latitudes were formed 2006 in Hertfordshire, UK primarily influenced by cinematic rock, doom metal and the roster of Hydra Head Records. On their fourth album ‘Part Island’ the UK atmospheric metal band Latitudes weave emotive metallic power and dream-state vulnerability – summoning a new level of melodicism through cast-iron, heartfelt songcraft. Foregrounding vocals on every album track for the first time in the band’s 12 years, ‘Part Island’ is a dynamic collection unashamedly brim-filled with sadness and regret. Helmed by a performance of sheer naked honesty from vocalist Adam Symonds, the record incorporates acoustic guitar, piano and analogue synth within flowing volleys of melodic black metal, weighty contemplative doom and the wide-ranging wistfulness of indie, folk and shoegaze songwriting. Produced by Chris Fielding (CONAN) at Skyhammer Studio, mastered by Audiosiege (CONVERGE) and featuring artwork by the in-demand Dehn […]
Band Review: Outright Resistance
There’s something about receiving new material for reviews that often leaves reviewers feeling a bit uneasy if not outright anxious. From having received some dreadful stuff to stumbling upon new bands worthy of platinum status; the spectrum on which new bands operate is nothing but vast. Today, we have found a band on the further end of that spectrum. And we’re not talking about the shitty end. Outright Resistance claim to be able to appease fans of Slipknot, Every Time I Die and Parkway Drive. We accept that they may not possess the theatrical nature and brutish instrumental range of Slipknot, but they have the heaviness, output and makings of becoming a favourable band on the scene. Would we want to see Cargo Cult live? Well, that’s a hell yeah! Some of their faster tracks are ideal for mosh pit-ignition. They have some rad riffs that’ll entice you to nod, if not invite you to execute a self-inflicted neck injury. With that said, we’re pleased to have their work grace our earholes instead of us puckering up our buttholes. With tons of new bands emerging world-wide, we’re pretty happy that Outright Resistance are not just another band and for this, we’re […]
Judas Priest Cancels South African Tour
British Heavy Metallers Judas Priest have cancelled their shows scheduled for South Africa. They have released the following statement via Social Media: “Due to circumstances totally beyond our control we are extremely sorry to have to announce that because of logistical and technical reasons the South African shows have been cancelled – we are very disappointed that this has happened as we were looking forward to performing in South Africa for our fans there for the first time – we have been touring the world for nearly 50 years and have always honored our commitments – we are all very upset about this situation.” Now, we’re no experts but we’re leaning towards the reason having something to do with Load Shedding. No international act wants to play to an audience only to have their power cut mid-set. We’ve seen this happen before.

Alpha Wolf – Half Living Things (2024) Album Review
Rating: 8/10 Alpha Wolf’s Half Living Things: Brutal, Atmospheric, and Relentlessly Solid Alpha Wolf’s Half Living Things is the kind of album that doesn’t ask for your attention—it demands it. Twelve tracks, all compact and punchy, this is the kind of record that takes you by the collar and doesn’t let go. From the first note to the last, it’s clear that Alpha Wolf is on top of their game, delivering an album that’s as aggressive as it is tight, with just the right amount of variation to keep you hooked. Production-wise, the album is crisp, with a balance of power and precision that serves the band well. The guitars hit with that signature heaviness, while the drums steal the show at times, locking in with a ferocity that feels like an engine revving just before it bursts into overdrive. Synths, often the unwelcome guest in heavier music, are smoothly integrated into the soundscape here, adding a layer of atmosphere without ever undercutting the intensity. Vocally, the performance is relentless—there’s no sugarcoating or polish, just straight-up aggression. It’s the kind of vocal delivery that feels like a shot of adrenaline, keeping pace with the pounding rhythm section and chaotic guitar […]
Blood Incantation – Absolute Elsewhere (2024) Album Review
Rating: 6/10 Blood Incantation’s Absolute Elsewhere offers a bold instrumental journey, but struggles to deliver the full punch expected from a standout metal release. Blood Incantation’s Absolute Elsewhere is an intriguing dive into expansive soundscapes, where the music takes precedence and the vocals step into the background. At just six tracks, none under five minutes, this album feels more like a cinematic journey than a traditional death metal offering. The band’s signature technical prowess is on full display, but the overall impact? A bit of a mixed bag. Production-wise, the album struggles to balance its heavier moments with its more atmospheric, softer parts. The soundscapes are beautifully constructed, but when the music turns heavy, it feels like the mix doesn’t quite carry the same punch. While previous works may have leaned into more aggressive tendencies, this album chooses a more instrumental, almost meditative approach, although less so than its predecessor. It’s musically innovative and ambitious, though at times the vocals feel like an afterthought—there, but not fully commanding the listener’s attention. Speaking of vocals, while there are some heavy, guttural moments, they never quite break through the instrumental dominance. It’s clear that Absolute Elsewhere isn’t about the lyrics or vocal […]
Left To Suffer – Leap of Death (2024) Album Review
Rating: 7/10 Leap of Death by Left To Suffer delivers heavy riffs and intensity, but struggles with inconsistent pacing and softer moments that dilute its impact. Leap of Death sees Left To Suffer navigating the line between chaos and melody, offering a raw, unfiltered blend of deathcore brutality and atmospheric shifts. The band’s heavy riffs are undeniably solid, with sharp production that allows the instrumentation to cut through clearly. Each track presents a tight composition, showcasing the band’s growing technical skill. While the instrumentals hit hard, the lyrics feel somewhat underwhelming. For a band whose vocal delivery often borders on ferocious, the words don’t always match the intensity. A heavier lyrical direction would’ve made the growls feel more purposeful. And though the clean vocals are well-performed, their inclusion occasionally detracts from the album’s overall force. It feels as though the band is torn between maintaining their brutal edge and appealing to a wider audience, causing the softer moments to lose momentum. Despite the band’s talent, Leap of Death doesn’t consistently maintain its energy. The flow from track to track is uneven, with some songs feeling disconnected, making it harder to stay fully immersed. That said, there are moments—specific breakdowns or […]
Fleshgod Apocalypse – Opera (2024) Album Review
Rating: 7/10 Opera by Fleshgod Apocalypse masterfully blends symphonic grandeur with death metal ferocity, but leans too heavily on familiar territory without breaking new ground. Opera, Fleshgod Apocalypse’s latest effort, delivers exactly what fans of their symphonic death metal sound would expect: a grand fusion of orchestral elegance and crushing brutality. The opening track, “Ode To Art – De’ Sepolcri,” sets the stage with a captivating, operatic intro before launching into their signature heaviness. Veronica Bordacchini’s clean vocals are a standout, balancing the intense growls with a haunting, melodic grace. Lyrically, Opera dives into darker themes, with tracks like “Bloodclock” pulling you into a whirlwind of heavy riffs and grandeur. Despite the album’s strong moments, it feels like more of the same. The band leans even further into their symphonic elements, but there’s a sense of familiarity that prevents Opera from standing out as truly innovative compared to their previous releases. While the instrumental performances are strong, particularly the guitars and drums, the absence of founding bassist Paolo Rossi leaves a subtle gap, with Francesco Paoli now taking over bass duties. The bass could have used more punch to match the intensity of the rest of the album, but that’s […]
Deicide – Banished By Sin (2024) Album Review
Rating: 8/10 Deicide’s latest release is a razor-sharp homage to old-school death metal, proving these veterans still know how to unleash relentless fury with zero compromises. Deicide is back, and they’ve cranked up the evil for their latest release. The production is sharp and clear, which, depending on where you stand, might feel like a well-polished blade or a bit too clean for comfort. Either way, it’s a significant leap forward from some of their recent offerings and they’ve leaned into what they do best: pure, unfiltered death metal. No frills, no bullshit—just a steady stream of brutal riffage and hellfire. Glen Benton hasn’t lost his edge. His guttural roars are just as relentless as ever, and they bring the dark, anti-religious lyrical themes we’ve come to expect from Deicide. While the satanic lyrics might not resonate on a deep, emotional level (because let’s face it, we’ve been through this particular underworld before), they’re still delivered with a conviction that only Benton can manage. You can almost feel the heat rising from his vocal cords. On the instrumental side, the band went full throttle. The guitars and drums carry that vintage thrash-inspired sound, with a precision that shows their experience. […]
Fit For An Autopsy– The Nothing That Is (2024) Album Review
Rating: 8/10 Fit For An Autopsy’s latest album doesn’t break the mold, but it sure as hell crushes it. Fit For An Autopsy’s latest drop sticks to the formula that made them a staple of the scene—delivering an album that’s both crushingly heavy and hauntingly atmospheric. They’re not exactly reinventing the wheel here, but why mess with what works? The production is solid, letting every skull-rattling riff and low-end growl land with all the weight you’d expect from these death metal veterans. Lyrically, the album goes all-in on themes of decay, curses, and some good old-fashioned hopelessness. The words are intense, apocalyptic, and unapologetically bleak, perfectly paired with clean vocals that carry an eerie edge and guttural roars that could probably raise the dead. The band knows when to go for the throat with fast, relentless riffs and when to pull back and let a slow, heavy groove crush the air out of your lungs. Tracks like “Spoils of The Horde” flex their talent for dynamic compositions, starting with cinematic intros before diving headfirst into pure chaos. The flow between tracks feels almost like the chapters of a grim story, each track bleeding into the next without a single wasted […]
Nile– The Underworld Awaits Us All (2024) Album Review
Rating: 7/10 Nile’s latest album hits with relentless technical chaos, but leaves you craving a bit more groove amid the ancient carnage. The godfathers of technical death metal are back, and Nile is still doing what they do best: brutal, old-school heaviness with their signature nod to ancient Egypt. The production quality holds up well for their relentless style, keeping things polished without losing that raw edge. And while the album doesn’t completely revolutionize their sound, it does refine and deepen it. There’s a nice balance between crushing death growls and their epic, chaotic riffs, with drummer George Kollias working his kit like a man possessed. Lyrically, they’re sticking to their roots, invoking imagery straight out of ancient temples and Egyptian lore. For someone who hasn’t tuned in to Nile since their early days, it’s cool to see that they haven’t lost touch with what makes them distinct. But honestly, the relentless technical onslaught had me wanting to switch it up every third track. Call it old age or call it the chaos, but a bit more groove would have made this old headbanger stay in for longer stretches. Tracks flow well from start to finish, maintaining a solid pace. […]
Aborted – Vault of Horrors (2024) Album Review
Aborted’s Vault of Horrors is a savage blend of blood-pumping riffs, throat-slaughtering vocals and enough synchronized chaos to drag you kicking and screaming (with delight) into the abyss— A headbanger’s paradise with a side of madness.
Job For A Cowboy– Moon Healer (2024) Album Review
Rating: 8/10 Job For A Cowboy’s Moon Healer is a brutal, chaotic ride that balances raw intensity with technical finesse—This one has aged well so far this year. Job For A Cowboy’s latest album brings death metal fans a fresh wave of gritty intensity with a hint of experimentation that might just redefine what we expect from these seasoned veterans. Released in February 2024, this album already feels like a staple in their discography, marking what many are calling their best release yet. Right off the bat, the production quality hits home—crisp and balanced, with Jonny Davy’s guttural vocals standing out in the mix, delivering graphic and visual lyrics that evoke a cinematic brutality. There’s a refined intensity in his voice, a rawness that commands each track without overshadowing the instrumental heft that lies beneath. Guitarists Al Glassman and Tony Sannicandro bring an aggression to the record, though some tracks veer into chaotic territory—a byproduct of tech death that’s not for everyone but keeps the sound distinctly theirs. The tracks do maintain a groove in the breakdowns, most notably on “Grinding Wheels of Ophanim,” where rhythm and riffs find a satisfying consistency. The album’s flow is thoughtful, unfolding with the […]
Behemoth – XXX Years Ov Blasphemy (2024) Live Album Review
Rating: 6/10 Behemoth’s XXX Years Ov Blasphemy captures the raw, unpolished grit of their legendary live sound, celebrating three decades of blasphemy. Marking three decades of dark mastery, XXX Years Ov Blasphemy is a live tribute to Behemoth’s relentless journey in blackened death metal. With a slightly muddy mix (but hey, it’s a live album!), this record captures the raw, unfiltered energy of their stage presence. For die-hard fans, it’s a reminder of the band’s status as legends. Nergal’s vocals, though perhaps showing the grit of time, command a certain maturity that loyal listeners may respect. It’s not revolutionary, nor does it venture into new territory, but it’s a powerful nod to Behemoth’s roots and relentless endurance. Instrumentally, XXX Years Ov Blasphemy doesn’t disappoint: classic Behemoth brutality, Inferno’s drum thunder, and Orion’s unmistakable basslines come through with force. But if you’re looking for emotional catharsis, it may not strike the deepest chord—this album is for those who want to feel the weight of Behemoth’s legacy without expecting a reinvention. Oceano – Living Chaos (2024) Album Review
Rating: 9/10 Living Chaos is a brutal, relentless return from Oceano, fusing tight grooves and crushing breakdowns into a deathcore powerhouse. Oceano’s Living Chaos delivers a fiercely satisfying return, a brutal deathcore showcase that demonstrates why they’ve remained genre giants. The band’s sixth studio album, and their first release in seven years, Living Chaos hits hard with guttural intensity and brilliantly layered instrumentals, making it an easy 9/10 for fans of heavy, chaotic soundscapes. Opening with “Darkness Rising,” the band immediately establishes the tone of this record. The breakdown alone in this track is pure weight—dense and consuming, it slams you into the experience with visceral force. It’s this kind of impact that resonates across the album, with each song building upon the relentless energy of the last. Drummer Matt Kohanowski, proves his worth here with powerful, unrelenting beats that sync perfectly with Adam Warren’s crushing vocal depth. The album features nine tracks that don’t waste a second, sticking to tight runtimes while managing to incorporate complexity. Each track averages about three and a half minutes, keeping things concise yet fully immersive. And while Oceano doesn’t break from their brutal roots, they add new layers that reflect the genre’s evolution. […]
The Browning – Omni (2024) Album Review
Rating: 8/10 The Browning’s Omni is a powerhouse metalcore album, blending crushing riffs, synth-driven atmospheres and vocal depth for an immersive, high-energy experience. The Browning’s 2024 album Omni solidifies their status as one of the best metalcore bands today, blending industrial elements, synths, and sheer vocal force. This isn’t just another metalcore album; it’s an immersive experience with a distinct, riff-heavy edge. Key Tracks and Collaborations “Misery.exe,” featuring YouTube guitar legend Nik Nocturnal, delivers a relentless pace with spine-rattling double kicks, setting the tone for Omni’s intensity. Another standout track, “Deceiver,” kicks off with a German intro that feels like a nod to Rammstein—a perfect choice for fans who crave dark, synth-infused vibes. Then there’s “FED UP,” likely to be a fan favorite, where the breakdowns and Jonny McBee’s diverse vocal range push metalcore boundaries. Heavy and modern, “FED UP” combines screaming, melodic singing, and layered synths that elevate The Browning’s sound to new heights. The Browning’s Signature Sound on Omni Tracks like “Soul Drift” and the title track “Omni” showcase Omni’s powerful production quality, with layers of sound effects, atmospheric synths, and slick drum work. “Soul Drift” ends the album on a strong note, leaving listeners hanging and ready […]
Defeated Sanity – Chronicles of Lunacy (2024) Album Review
Rating: 9/10 A fearless dive into the chaotic depths of technical death metal mastery. Defeated Sanity’s Chronicles of Lunacy is the band’s unapologetic 2024 return to technical death metal mayhem. With a razor-sharp production and unwavering adherence to their roots, this album solidifies their standing as elder statesmen of the genre while pushing their chaotic compositions to new levels of complexity. Crystal Clear Chaos From the outset, the album dazzles with its pristine production, offering clarity that allows every blast beat, bass groove, and guttural growl to shine. Lille Gruber’s drumming is an absolute masterclass in controlled chaos, pairing flawlessly with Jacob Schmidt’s intricate bass rhythms. Tracks like “Accelerating The Rot” are a testament to the band’s technical prowess, delivering bone-rattling blast beats while maintaining an undercurrent of raw brutality. Vocals That Cut Through the Madness Josh Welshman’s vocal performance is a brutal highlight. Free from overproduction, his gutturals and growls embody the raw essence of death metal. Whether delivering relentless ferocity on tracks like “The Odour of Sanctity” or complementing slower grooves on “A Patriarchy Perverse,” his voice is both versatile and captivating. Groove Amidst the Lunacy While technical death metal can often feel overwhelming, Defeated Sanity masterfully balances […]
