About

Your Cynical Sanity

Your Cynical Sanity bring a blackened edge to deathcore, built around aggressive vocals, heavy rhythmic guitars and groove-driven arrangements. Formed in Durban, South Africa, the band draws on extreme metal's heavier elements without losing its emphasis on rhythm and impact. Their music confronts anger, isolation, emotional exhaustion and personal conflict through direct, often confrontational lyrics. Across their recordings, the group has developed a sound shaped by shifting personnel, blackened influences and an increasingly personal approach to songwriting.

History

Your Cynical Sanity formed in Durban, South Africa, in 2012, establishing themselves within the city's alternative metal scene with an aggressive, groove-oriented approach to deathcore. The band released its first recorded EP, Put To Rest, on March 16, 2014. The six-track release marked the beginning of their recorded catalogue. The following years brought changes in personnel and musical direction. During the COVID-19 lockdown, vocalist and founder Myke Taylor began developing material with guitarist Dylan Macdonald, guitarist Blake Merchant and drummer Rohan Myburgh. The song Doom Town emerged from those sessions, drawing on the atmosphere of uncertainty and stagnation experienced in Durban during the pandemic. Other recordings from this period included the singles Drifter and Death Wish. On December 30, 2024, Your Cynical Sanity released Anhedonic, an eight-track album exploring pessimism, resentment, emotional struggle and the consequences of suppressed feelings. The record was mixed and mastered by Fredrik Erlingsson of Audiosphere Recordings in Sweden, with artwork by Durban illustrator Michael Dos. The band subsequently promoted the album through live performances, including an appearance at Metal4Africa's SummerFest in 2025. Your Cynical Sanity continued recording and performing through 2026. On October 29, the band released Empty through Dan Hedonic Records. Written by Myke Taylor, the single addresses prolonged emotional distress, exhaustion and suicidal despair. An official music video followed, receiving coverage from AFRICA.ROCKS on November 3, 2026. The release marked another chapter in the band's increasingly personal lyrical direction.
